Alfred Hawthorn Hill, a young lad with a passion for comedy, was born with a special introduction to the world of Burlesque Shows and theatre courtesy of his grandfather. This early exposure would later become the source of inspiration for Benny Hill's comedic genius. After serving his country during World War II, Benny relocated to London, adopted the stage name Benny Hill, and began his career in variety shows.
Initially, Benny formed a double act with Reg Varney and appeared on radio shows. However, it was his exceptional talent for impressions and comic timing that landed him his first major break on television with the show "Hi There" in 1949. The Benny Hill Show, which premiered in 1955, revolutionized the world of comedy with its unique blend of cheeky humor, songs, and impressions. This groundbreaking format made it a massive hit, running for an impressive 40 years.
Benny Hill's career extended beyond television, as he made cameo appearances in films such as The Italian Job (1969),Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968),and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes (1965). In 1971, he achieved a significant milestone with his hit record "Ernie The Fastest Milkman In The West".
The Benny Hill Show made its American debut in 1979, catapulting Benny to stardom in the United States. The show itself has been broadcast in 109 countries, earning a BAFTA and the prestigious Golden Rose Of Montreaux Award. Benny Hill's television career came to an end in 1989, but his popularity persisted, leading him to complete a US TV special, Benny Hill's World Tour: New York! (1991),just before his passing in 1992.
