Big Moe's life story began on the Southside of Houston, Texas, where he spent his formative years growing up in the notorious Third Ward neighborhood, also affectionately known as the "Tre". This gritty urban environment would later influence his unique blend of singing and rapping styles, setting him apart from his peers.
As a young artist, Big Moe crossed paths with the legendary DJ Screw, a pioneer of the Houston hip-hop scene, and became a key member of his group, the Screwed Up Click. This association not only exposed him to a wider audience but also granted him access to the creative hub of the city's underground music scene.
In the early 2000s, Big Moe joined the Texas-based rap label Wreckshop Records, which enabled him to release his debut album, City of Syrup. This independent effort sold an impressive 200,000 copies, a testament to his growing popularity.
Following a series of discussions with major record labels, Big Moe ultimately signed with Priority Records, a label renowned for its roster of successful artists, including Snoop Dogg and Lil' Zane. His first major album, Purple World, was fueled by the lead single "Purple Stuff", but unfortunately failed to achieve widespread crossover success.
Disappointed by the album's performance, Big Moe returned to his underground roots, releasing his third LP, Moe Life, in October 2003. This album featured the club-smashing hit "Just a Dog", which quickly gained traction throughout the South and re-established Big Moe as a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop world.
