Biography

Bo Goldman is a renowned screenwriter, revered by many in the film industry. Throughout his illustrious career, he has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, a New York Film Critics Award, two Writers Guild Awards, and three Golden Globes.

Born in New York City, Goldman was educated at Exeter and Princeton, where he developed his passion for writing and producing. He began his career on Broadway, working as a lyricist and eventually becoming president of the prestigious Triangle show, which featured notable stars such as James Stewart and Joshua Logan.

Goldman's transition to television was mentored by the respected Fred Coe, and he went on to associate produce and script edit Coe's prestigious Playhouse 90 series. He also produced and wrote for Public Television's NET Playhouse, where he first attempted to write for the screen, resulting in an early version of Shoot the Moon, which caught the attention of Hollywood.

After reading Shoot the Moon, Milos Forman asked Goldman to write the screenplay for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which won all five top Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay for Goldman. This was the first film to achieve this feat since Frank Capra's It Happened One Night in 1934.

Goldman's subsequent projects included The Rose, which was nominated for four Academy Awards, and Melvin and Howard, which earned him his second Oscar and Writers Guild Award. He also wrote the screenplay for Shoot the Moon, which was eventually filmed by Alan Parker and received international acclaim.

Throughout his career, Goldman has contributed to numerous films, including Ragtime, The Flamingo Kid, and Dick Tracy, and has tried his hand at directing, although neither project came to fruition. He has continued to work in the film industry, writing screenplays for Scent of a Woman, City Hall, Meet Joe Black, and The Perfect Storm, among others.

Goldman is married to Mab Ashforth and has six children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He resides in Rockville, Maine.
