Bob Saget was an American actor, stand-up comedian, and television host from Philadelphia. He played the role of Danny Tanner, the patriarch of the Tanner family, in the popular sitcom "Full House" from 1987 to 1995 and reprised his role in the sequel series "Fuller House" from 2016 to 2020. Saget also hosted the long-running clip show "America's Funniest Home Videos" from 1989 to 1997 and voiced the narrator in the hit sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" from 2005 to 2014.
Born in 1956 to a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Saget grew up in Norfolk, Virginia, where he attended Temple Israel synagogue and was reportedly a rebellious student. He spent part of his high school years in Los Angeles, where he befriended veteran comedian Larry Fine, and attended a Philadelphia high school during his senior year.
Saget received his college education at the Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts, a college associated with Temple University in Philadelphia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978 and had already started performing in comedy clubs during his college years.
After graduating, Saget worked mostly as a comedian, appearing in minor acting roles in films and television shows. He got his big break when he was chosen to portray widowed father Danny Tanner in the sitcom "Full House," which became a huge success and lasted for eight seasons.
Saget's other notable roles include hosting "America's Funniest Home Videos" and voicing the narrator in "How I Met Your Mother." He also directed several films and television shows, including the dramatic television film "For Hope" and the comedy film "Dirty Work."
In addition to his acting and directing career, Saget was a devoted philanthropist and served on the board of directors for the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He was also a frequent host of television events and continued to perform stand-up comedy throughout his career.
Saget passed away on January 9, 2022, at the age of 65, due to blunt head trauma from an accidental fall. He was buried at the Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, next to the graves of his parents and sister.
