Robert Harper, also known as Bobby Ball, and Thomas Derbyshire, also known as Tommy Cannon, were both born in the town of Oldham. Their paths crossed in the early 1960s, when they worked as welders in the same factory. As friends, they formed a club act called "Bobby and Stevie Rhythm", which later evolved into the Sherrell Brothers, and eventually, The Harper Brothers.
Initially, the duo focused on their vocals, but over time, they infused their act with comedy. They turned professional in the late 1960s and eventually rebranded themselves as Cannon and Ball. Their first television appearance was on "Opportunity Knocks" in 1968, although they finished in last place.
Throughout the 1970s, Cannon and Ball appeared on various TV shows, including "The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club". However, their work remained primarily in clubs and theaters during this period. Their last television series aired in 1991, by which time their popularity on TV had waned. Nevertheless, they continued to perform in theater summer seasons and pantomimes, drawing large audiences.
Despite their on-stage success, off-stage issues plagued the duo. Over the years, they gradually grew apart, only communicating when work demanded it. Bobby's personal life was marked by heavy drinking, womanizing, and a reputation for violence. In 1986, Ball found faith in Christianity, followed by Cannon in 1992.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Cannon and Ball remained busy with theater tours, summer shows, pantomimes, and TV appearances. They also performed regular Christian concerts and "evening with..." shows, where they shared stories about their lives and faith.
