Novakovic was born on November 17, 1981, in Belgrade, Serbia, Yugoslavia. At the age of seven, she moved to Australia with her family. Initially interested in pursuing a career in social work or medicine, she later changed her mind and decided to follow her passion for the performing arts.
She attended The McDonald College in Sydney, where she was the Dux of 1999, and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) with a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts in 2002. Novakovic's younger sister, Valentina Novakovic, is also an actress, known for her role in the Australian soap opera Neighbours.
In her early career, Novakovic won an Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Television Drama or Comedy for her role in the ABC mini-series Marking Time. She has also appeared in various films and television shows, including Blackrock, Strange Fits of Passion, The Monkey's Mask, Thunderstruck, Solo, Optimisti, Skinning, Drag Me to Hell, Edge of Darkness, Devil, Burning Man, and Generation Um.
In addition to her screen work, Novakovic has a strong background in theatre. She has performed in numerous productions with various companies, including the Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, and Bell Shakespeare Company. She has received several award nominations for her performances, including a Helpmann Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Green Room Award nomination for Best Actress.
Novakovic is also the co-founder and artistic director of Ride On Theatre, an independent theatre company based in Sydney and Melbourne. She has produced and performed in several productions with the company, including the critically acclaimed "Loveplay" and "Debris."
In recent years, Novakovic has continued to work in film and television, appearing in projects such as Rake, The Hallow, and Shameless. She is represented by several talent agencies and management companies, including CAA, Management 360, and Lisa Mann Creative Management.
