Bryn Terfel Jones, a renowned Welsh bass-baritone opera and concert singer, was born on November 9, 1965, in Pant Glas, Caernarfonshire, Wales. As the child of a farmer, he exhibited a remarkable talent for music from a very young age.
In 1984, he enrolled in the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he spent the next five years honing his craft, earning numerous singing awards along the way. His hard work and dedication ultimately led to his graduation in 1989.
Terfel's professional opera debut took place in 1990 with the Welsh National Opera, where he portrayed Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. The following year, he made his English National Opera debut as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro.
In 1992, he made his concert debut with a performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony at the Ravinia Festival. This marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career, during which he would go on to sing at some of the world's most esteemed opera houses, including the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Santa Fe Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, and La Scala.
By the mid-1990s, Terfel had expanded his repertoire to include more serious operatic works, focusing primarily on the compositions of Wagner and Puccini. In 2007, he took a break from opera to appear in a concert version of Sweeney Todd, and he also recorded several albums of popular music.
In 2014, he reprised his role as Sweeney Todd in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - In Concert with the New York Philharmonic. He continues to sing opera on various stages and regularly releases albums.
In his personal life, Terfel was married to Lesley Jones from 1987 to 2013, with whom he had three sons. Since 2019, he has been married to harpist Hannah Stone, with whom he has a daughter.
