Cal Freundlich is a multifaceted creative force, hailing from New York City, and boasting a distinctive sound that seamlessly blends acoustic, organic, and electronic elements. With a background that spans playing guitar in various rock, alternative, and jazz bands, combined with formal training in film composition, Cal has developed a unique style and approach to his craft.
As a versatile composer, Cal has written music for a wide range of projects, including documentaries, narrative films, animations, video games, and web-comics. His recent work includes scoring the 2023 feature documentary "Eat Bitter," which premiered at CPH: DOX, as well as the 2022 documentary film "Found," which won the Special Jury Prize and Best Documentary at the Yugo BAFTA Student Awards, and the Gold Medal at the Student Academy Awards.
Cal's impressive portfolio also includes the 2021 documentary film "Eagles Rest in Liangshan," which took home the Silver Medal in the Best Documentary category at the Student Academy Awards, and the 2021 short film "Intersection," which premiered at the TriBeCa Film Festival. As the lead composer and Music Director for Laurel Pursuit Studios, Cal has recently partnered with AETHON BOOKS to create a new slate of webcomics.
Cal's passion for storytelling and media is evident in his approach to film scoring, which he describes as providing a sense of freedom and expression. His academic background includes a Master's in Music from NYU Steinhardt, and he was awarded the prestigious Elmer Bernstein Award for Outstanding Collaboration and Engagement from the NYU Steinhardt Screen Scoring department in May 2022.
When not composing, Cal is also an emerging alternative R&B artist, performing and releasing music under the name Caleb Moore. His debut EP was released in July 2024, showcasing his versatility and talent beyond the realm of film scoring.
