Carl Laudan is a renowned Genie-nominated independent filmmaker, whose illustrious career spans decades. He began his journey by studying film at Northwestern University in Illinois and later at the prestigious Vancouver Film School.
In 1991, Carl founded and presided over the King's Independent Filmmakers' Society in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he played a pivotal role in nurturing the talents of emerging independent filmmakers. Concurrently, he was pursuing his passion for contemporary philosophies at the university.
Throughout his career, Carl has directed numerous music videos, and his exceptional skills behind the camera have earned him contracts to edit and provide visual effects for various projects, including documentary and dramatic television, commercials, and film. His expertise has been in high demand, and he has worked on a wide range of projects, from documentary films to commercials.
One of his most notable projects is the short live-action comedy, The Big Thing, which earned him a Genie nomination. This achievement marked a significant milestone in his career and paved the way for his future endeavors.
Carl's professional relationship with Katherine Schlemmer began when he was contracted to edit an independent feature film in Montreal. It was during this time that he met Kate, and they collaborated on several projects, including the short film Man Depot, which starred Kate as Euphlemlia Schmlaudmler.
In 2012, Carl and Kate developed their first feature drama, Sheltered Life, through the Canadian Film Centre's Feature Film Project. The film was a critical success, and it was licensed and broadcast on Superchannel.
The duo's feature comedy, The Death (and Life) of Carl Naardlinger, is slated for release in 2018. In addition to this project, Carl and Kate have several other feature projects in the pipeline, including Peachland, Life Science, Handiwork, and Tiny.
