Carlos Conceição is a multifaceted Portuguese-Angolan filmmaker with a profound passion for English Literature of the Romanticism, having authored in-depth monographs on iconic authors such as Frankenstein, Edgar Allan Poe, J. G. Ballard, and J. M. Coetzee.
After graduating from the Lisbon Film School in 2006, Conceição's early career was marked by the creation of video art, installations, and music videos for notable bands like Pop Dell'Arte.
His breakthrough came with the short fiction film "The Flesh" in 2010, which garnered attention for its unique storytelling. However, it was his subsequent short films "Goodnight Cinderella" (2014) and "Bad Bunny" (2017) that solidified his position as a prominent voice in European cinema.
Conceição's short films have been showcased in prestigious festivals and retrospectives, including the Cinémathèque Française, the Amiens Film Festival, the Vila do Conde Short Film Festival, and SiciliaQueer in Palermo.
A compilation of his short fiction was released on DVD in France in 2015 and the United States in 2023.
Conceição's first feature film, "Serpentarius", premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2019, showcasing a more experimental and hybrid style than his previous short films.
The sci-fi film received widespread acclaim and was featured in numerous film festivals, earning numerous awards.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Conceição premiered a medium-length horror film, "Name Above Title" (2020),which unexpectedly became a hit at genre festivals and a favorite among horror fans, winning the prestigious silver Méliès in Strasbourg and competing for the gold Méliès at the Sitges Film Festival.
In 2022, Conceição's second feature film, "Tommy Guns", was released at the Locarno Film Festival, where it received the Europa Cinemas Label for Best European Film. The film is distributed in the United States by Kino Lorber.
