Charlie's journey in the film industry began in the late 1980s, when he emerged from New Zealand's film school as an assistant director, working on notable films such as 'End of the Golden Weather' and 'The Piano', during a period of rapid expansion in the NZ film industry.
He started directing 2nd Unit on the American TV show 'Hercules' in 1993, which led to a prolonged period of collaboration with Pacific Renaissance Pictures, culminating in his directing main unit on 32 episodes of 'Hercules', 'Young Hercules', and 'Jack of All Trades'.
Since then, Charlie has been actively directing a mix of NZ and US television shows, including 'Power Rangers', 'Almighty Johnsons', and 'The Cult', as well as a few telemovies, such as 'Fearless' and 'Lawless'. Along the way, he has also directed 2nd Unit on American feature films, including '30 Days of Night' and 'The Warriors Way'.
Recently, Charlie has focused on projects with strong NZ stories that rely on compelling performances, including the telemovie 'Tangiwai - A Love Story', which earned a nomination for best director at the Monte Carlo TV Festival, as well as the TV movie 'Pirates of the Airwaves', a docudrama about pirate radio in 1960s NZ.
Having just completed three seasons of the Starz network show 'Ash vs Evil Dead', Charlie held the dual role of 2nd Unit Director and Associate Producer.
Looking to the future, Charlie is passionate about discovering and developing projects that feature a central kiwi component, with inherently global themes, and the ability to resonate with audiences worldwide.
Charlie is currently settled in Golden Bay, New Zealand, with his family, animals, and a sprawling hillside of his favorite trees.
