Biography

Charlotte Moorman was an American virtuoso cellist, whose remarkable career traversed the realms of both classical music and avant-garde performance art, earning her the esteemed moniker "Jeanne d'Arc of new music". As the visionary founder of the Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York, Moorman played a pivotal role in promoting and celebrating innovative and boundary-pushing artistic expressions.

Throughout her illustrious career, Moorman maintained a close and collaborative relationship with the renowned Korean artist Nam June Paik, frequently joining forces to create groundbreaking works that pushed the boundaries of art and music. Moorman's journey into the world of avant-garde performance art was largely facilitated by her roommate and friend, the enigmatic Yoko Ono, who introduced her to the vibrant and experimental art scene of the 1960s.

Prior to her foray into the avant-garde, Moorman had established herself as a talented classical cellist, having studied at the prestigious Juilliard School. She went on to launch a successful career as a classical concert hall performer, even joining the esteemed American Symphony Orchestra.
