Biography

Chris Amon, a New Zealand racing driver, was born on July 20, 1943, in Bulls, New Zealand, and passed away on August 3, 2016. He was renowned for his exceptional skill and smooth driving style, often referred to as one of the best Formula 1 drivers never to win a Grand Prix.

Amon's motorsport career began in the 1960s and he rapidly ascended through the ranks to compete in Formula 1, driving for prestigious teams such as Ferrari, March, and Matra. Throughout his career, he achieved numerous pole positions and podium finishes.

In 1966, Amon and Bruce McLaren won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving a Ford GT40, which was one of his most notable victories outside of Formula 1. Despite his exceptional talent and speed, Amon faced frequent mechanical issues and bad luck, ultimately denying him a Formula 1 race victory.

After retiring from racing in 1976, Amon returned to New Zealand, where he managed his family's farm and remained involved in motorsport as a consultant and commentator. He is remembered as a gifted and courageous driver whose career exemplified both brilliance and misfortune in equal measure.
