Charles Rutledge Johnson, known professionally as Chubby Johnson, was born on August 13, 1903, in Terre Haute, Indiana.
As a journalist, Johnson made a living by writing for various publications and worked as a radio announcer and columnist until he was nearly 50 years old.
Johnson's career in Hollywood began when he made his film debut in the Randolph Scott western Abilene Town in 1946.
In the 1950s, Johnson appeared in several films, including Rocky Mountain, where he starred alongside Errol Flynn, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams, and Slim Pickens.
Johnson also had a successful career in television, starring in the series Sky King from 1951 to 1954 and appearing in numerous other TV westerns, including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Rifleman.
Johnson's film career continued until 1969, with his final role being in Sam Whiskey.
Throughout his career, Johnson supported many notable actors, including James Stewart, James Cagney, Doris Day, Ronald Reagan, Barbara Stanwyck, and Burt Reynolds.
Johnson died on October 31, 1974, from complications related to a leg infection.
