Chuck Knipp, born in 1961, is a multifaceted individual with a unique career path. He is a drag queen and comedian, boasting dual citizenship of both the United States and Canada.
Knipp is perhaps best known for his alter egos, Shirley Q. Liquor and Betty Butterfield, characters that have garnered significant attention online. Prior to 2007, numerous videos featuring Butterfield were available on various YouTube accounts, but most mysteriously disappeared. However, in mid-2009, a significant number of videos were reuploaded, including many new ones.
These videos showcase Butterfield's relatable struggles to find a religious community or church where she feels a sense of belonging. Knipp's Butterfield character is not only an entertaining persona but also a poignant representation of the human experience.
In addition to his entertainment career, Knipp is an active citizen, holding dual citizenship of both the United States and Canada. He has been involved with the ACLU and the Libertarian Party, even serving as their candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, running in Texas's District 2.
Notably, the renowned entertainer RuPaul has been a long-time fan and supporter of Knipp's work. In response to critics who deemed Shirley Q. Liquor offensive, RuPaul emphatically stated, "Critics who think that Shirley Q. Liquor is offensive are idiots. Listen, I've been discriminated against by everybody in the world: gay people, black people, whatever. I know discrimination, I know racism, I know it very intimately. She's not racist, and if she were, she wouldn't be on my new CD."
In his blog, RuPaul further elaborated on his perspective, stating, "I am very sensitive to issues of racism, sexism, and discrimination. I am a gay black man, who started my career as a professional transvestite in Georgia, twenty years ago."
