He is a board-certified child and adult psychiatrist and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. As the medical director of Amen Clinics, Inc., Dr. Amen oversees a global network of clinics in California, Washington, Virginia, Georgia, and New York, with the world's largest database of functional brain scans, totaling nearly 90,000 scans on patients from 93 countries.
Dr. Amen is a gifted teacher, capable of making complex concepts in neuropsychiatry, neuroimaging, and brain health accessible to both professionals and the general public. He is the lead researcher on the world's largest brain imaging/brain rehabilitation study on professional football players, which revealed significant brain damage in a high percentage of retired players and demonstrated the possibility for rehabilitation using his principles.
Under the direction of Pastor Rick Warren, Dr. Amen is one of the chief architects of Saddleback Church's "Daniel Plan", a 52-week program aimed at promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being in churches. Dr. Amen is married to Tana Amen and is the father of four children and grandfather to six grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys playing table tennis.
