Biography

Daniel Yves Alfred Gélin, a celebrated French actor, entered the world on May 19, 1921, in Angers, a city located in the picturesque region of Maine-et-Loire, France. His parents, Yvonne Le Méner and Alfred Ernest Joseph Gélin, welcomed their young son into the world with great joy.

As a child, Daniel's family relocated to the charming coastal town of Saint-Malo when he was just ten years old. He spent his formative years in this new environment, attending college until his untimely expulsion due to his perceived 'uncouthness'.

After being expelled from his educational institution, his father went to great lengths to secure a job for him at a retail establishment specializing in the sale of canned salted cod. It was during this period of time that he stumbled upon his true calling in life - acting. The catalyst for this revelation was his chance encounter with the filming of Marc Allégret's cinematic masterpiece, Entrée des artistes. The experience left a profound impact on him, igniting a burning desire to relocate to the City of Light - Paris - and pursue a career in the esteemed world of acting.

Noted French actor Gélin embarked on a journey of artistic development, commencing his training at the esteemed Cours Simon in the vibrant city of Paris. Subsequently, he enrolled at the prestigious Conservatoire national d'art dramatique, where he had the distinct privilege of meeting the renowned Louis Jouvet, a celebrated figure in the world of French theatre. This pivotal encounter marked the beginning of Gélin's illustrious theatrical career, which would go on to span many years.

Gélin's entry into the world of cinema occurred in 1940, when he made his film debut in the movie Miquette. Initially, he appeared in small roles, gradually building his presence in the French film industry. For several years, he honed his craft, often taking on the role of an extra, gaining valuable experience and exposure in the process.

Noted French actor Gélin's career trajectory underwent a significant transformation in 1949, marking a turning point with his standout performance in the cinematic masterpiece, Rendez-vous de juillet. This pivotal role served as a springboard for a prolific career, with Gélin subsequently appearing in an astonishing array of over 150 films, collaborating with some of the most renowned directors of his time.

Among the esteemed filmmakers with whom Gélin had the privilege of working were Max Ophüls, Jacques Becker, Sacha Guitry, Alfred Hitchcock, and the inimitable Jean Cocteau. His impressive filmography is a testament to his remarkable range and adaptability as an actor, able to seamlessly transition between diverse genres and styles.

In addition to his notable on-screen appearances, Gélin also ventured into the realm of filmmaking, exercising his creative talents as both writer and director. In 1952, he brought his vision to life with the release of The Long Teeth, a film that showcased his skill and artistry behind the camera.

Throughout the 1950s, Gélin was a dominant force in the French cinematic landscape, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. However, his career trajectory took a precipitous downturn with the advent of the New Wave movement, a seismic shift that irreparably altered the landscape of French filmmaking.

As the New Wave's influence began to wane, Gélin redirected his creative energies towards the world of theater, where he continued to hone his craft for several years. Despite this temporary detour, his passion for the performing arts remained unwavering, and he eventually rediscovered his footing in the 1970s.

This period marked a resurgence in Gélin's career, as he transitioned seamlessly into the role of character actor, effortlessly bringing his vast experience and versatility to the small and silver screens. His contributions to French films and television productions during this era were nothing short of remarkable, earning him a reputation as a master of his craft.

Gélin's remarkable journey, marked by both triumph and adversity, ultimately came to a close with his passing, leaving behind a legacy that would continue to inspire and influence future generations of French actors and filmmakers.

The multifaceted and dynamic individual that was Gélin, whose personal life was marked by a series of significant relationships and experiences that shaped his identity. His first marriage was to the esteemed actress Danièle Delorme, with whom he shared a son, Xavier Gélin, a testament to the enduring bond between them.

Later in life, Gélin entered into a second marriage with the captivating model Sylvie Hirsch, with whom he welcomed three additional children, Pascal, Fiona, and Manuel, further expanding his family and enriching his life. However, his personal life was not without its complexities, as he also had a daughter, Maria Schneider, with 17-year-old model Marie Christine Schneider, an encounter that was shrouded in controversy due to his marital status at the time.

Noted French actor and artist, Gélin, embarked on a second marital journey in the year 1973, entering into a union with Lydie Zaks, a woman who would soon become the mother of his beloved daughter, Laura. Tragically, Gélin's life came to a close on November 29, 2002, in the City of Light, Paris, due to complications arising from kidney failure.
