Darlene, an Anishinaabe Kwe from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek in Northern Ontario, was born and raised in her community, where she now operates her studio, Pine Needle Productions. A multifaceted creative, she is a writer, film director, and video artist whose work has garnered international recognition, including screenings at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Darlene has also been involved in important community initiatives, collaborating with leaders and elders to develop and ratify the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek Gchi-Naaknigewin (Constitution). She continues to dedicate herself to governance and First Nations land and human rights work, ensuring that her community's voice is heard and respected.
Throughout her career, Darlene has remained committed to her artistic independence, retaining creative control over all her films and striving to protect the integrity of First Nations stories, imagery, history, and tradition. Her work is deeply rooted in her community and connected to the realities of First Nations people living in the 21st century, as well as her profound respect for Mother Earth.
As a storyteller, Darlene is driven by a passion for capturing imaginative images that convey truth through word, film, art, and song. She is honored to listen to and share the stories of her people, which often convey a range of emotions, from sadness and rejection to hope and optimism, and everything in between.
