Darrin Maharaj was born in Toronto, Ontario, to parents from the island of Trinidad and Tobago. At the age of 19, he began volunteering at the community radio station CKWR 98.7 fm in Waterloo, Ontario, starting in the midnight till 4am time slot as part of the duo "The 2 Youts" alongside Eric Lohrenz, featuring the best in hip-hop, reggae, and electronic music.
Their show quickly became the weekend's prime-time feature, with the "youts" interviewing some of the hottest stars in the music scene, including The Beastie Boys, Moby, and many others. Darrin then attended the School of Broadcast Journalism at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, and after a few months of general reporting, he transitioned to the Entertainment Videographer role for The New VR in Barrie, Ontario.
As a reporter, host, camera operator, editor, and producer, Darrin worked on daily stories, taking him across North America and putting him in unusual situations, such as interviewing top stars like John Travolta and Mel Gibson, wrestling crocodiles at Gatorland in Florida, and participating in activities like skydiving and rock climbing.
Darrin was then asked to help launch CHUM Television's newest station on the west coast, CITYTV in Vancouver, as their Entertainment Specialist. On his first day, he interviewed BC beauty Pamela Anderson at her beach home in Malibu, California, and caught the eye of world-renowned designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld, who put him in the front seat of her Viper for an impromptu photo session.
Aside from co-anchoring 10 news casts per week, Darrin hosted live cut-ins and season finales for popular programs like ABC's "The Bachelor" and "America's Next Top Model." After serving almost four years with Citytv Vancouver, Darrin returned home to host "Inside Jam!" and co-host "Canoe-Live" on Toronto's SUNTV.
In January 2007, Darrin left SUNTV and rejoined his old friend and mentor Moses Znaimer as a host and reporter for his production company, MZTV, where he works on various shows and upcoming projects, including serving as the host and face of the new broadcast network, TELUS TV, in western Canada.
Darrin continues to explore the world of acting, having appeared in several episodes of the hit sci-fi series "The Collector," the feature film "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" with Laura Linney and Colm Fiore, and worked closely with award-winning director Antoine Fuqua on the film "Shooter" starring Mark Wahlberg.
