Darryl Robert Small grew up in Southfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, where his professional career began at an astonishingly young age of just 8 months old. At this tender age, he landed print ads for a local diaper service, Dydee Diapers.
As he grew older, Darryl's passion for performing only intensified, and at the ripe old age of 5, he took on the lead role of King Nebuchadnezzar on stage. He continued to hone his craft, putting on shows in his backyard and singing for the local kids, a talent that would serve him well throughout his education.
Darryl's singing skills remained unmatched, even as he progressed through public school and into high school, where his Madrigal Choir won a prestigious Gold Medal in an international competition. His dedication to music led him to study voice as a major at the renowned Interlochen Fine Arts Academy.
Although Darryl's semipro-singing career was promising, he ultimately decided to leave the spotlight behind, opting instead to own and operate three businesses. However, after experiencing some personal changes, he decided to cash in and relocate to the Seattle area, where he would eventually try his hand at singing with the Seattle Men's Choir.
In 1993, Darryl participated in the National Showcase Awards, a national talent show, and after 3000 contestants had come and gone, he emerged as the first runner-up, or second place, in the competition.
Darryl went on to work in his family's chain of dry cleaners, Bella Cleaners Inc., and in 2000, he was awarded a Diamond Award from the Better Business Bureau for Entrepreneurial Spirit.
In 2010, Darryl teamed up with some local filmmakers who needed a singer to help with the songs they were writing. After two years in the studio, they were ready to film "Rock A-bye Deadman," a noir rock opera.
Since 2012, Darryl has accumulated an impressive 55+ IMDb credits, with numerous other roles in films and television still in post-production. Some highlights of his career include singing two songs for a pitch to Disney, appearing on the hit TV show Grey's Anatomy, and working alongside Reese Witherspoon in Wild and David Lynch in Twin Peaks: The Return.
In 2019, Darryl faced some health issues that have taken time to recover from, leading to a relocation back to his hometown and family. Despite this, the world remains eager to see what the future holds for Darryl's 71st IMDb credit.
As Darryl himself notes, there is always room for a new project, and he is eager to collaborate with directors and producers once again. In fact, four out of five directors have used him a second or third time, a testament to his dedication, talent, and versatility.
