David Robinson-Smith is an acclaimed Australian writer and director who hails from Budgewoi on the New South Wales Central Coast.
His creative endeavors revolve around complex themes such as ambiguity, regret, memory, and class, delving into the nuances of these subjects through morally ambiguous characters.
His filmography boasts the critically acclaimed short film Mud Crab (2022),which has garnered widespread recognition at prestigious festivals including the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in the United States, the Raindance Film Festival in London, the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia, and the BAFTA Aesthetica Short Film Festival in York. Mud Crab has received multiple accolades at the CILECT, Australian Director's Guild, St Kilda Film Festival, and Flickerfest, and is also nominated for Best Short Film at the 2024 AACTA Awards.
David's most recent short film, We Used To Own Houses (2023),made its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival as part of its esteemed 2023 Accelerator Lab, as well as at SXSW in Sydney. It has also been nominated for Best Direction in a Short Film at the 2023 Australian Director's Guild.
Currently, David is in the process of developing his debut feature film, Colossus, alongside Executive Producer Michele Bennett and Producer Julia Corcoran.
In 2024, David was distinguished as one of the directors featured in IF Magazine's Rising Talent issue.
