Derek Morgan, a native of East Harlem in New York City, began his performing career in community theatre during the winter and stock theatre programs in the summers, all made possible through a federal grant. During his time at Benjamin Franklin High School, he had a chance encounter with renowned actor George C. Scott in the lobby of Circle in the Square Theatre in Manhattan, which would later have a profound impact on his career.
While still in high school, Derek landed a role in the long-running radio show "Compositions Live" on WBAI Pacifica Radio, a position he held until his graduation. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, where he served as a medic, Derek pursued a Bachelor's degree in acting at California State University at Fullerton.
After graduating, Derek made his way to Los Angeles, where he discovered the Inner City Cultural Center, a thriving hub of artistic expression featuring multiple theatres. He appeared in numerous productions, including "Fight the Good Fight," "Purlie Victorious," "The Meeting," and "Diary of A Black Man," among others.
Derek's journey continued at the Victory Theater in Burbank, where he starred in the world premiere of "T-Bone and Weasel." His performance caught the attention of a talent agent while on tour with the musical "Hair" in Chicago, leading to representation and a subsequent move to Los Angeles.
A chance encounter with Ben Gazzara in New York City, where they spoke for over an hour on Madison Avenue, inspired Derek to continue pursuing his passion for the arts. This led to a lead performance in the critically acclaimed production of "Black Olive," earning him a NAACP Theatre Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Derek's television credits include memorable roles on "For The People," "Joan of Arcadia," and "Thief," as well as a starring role in the film "Found In Time," written, directed, and produced by Arthur Vincie. Additionally, he appeared in Tyler Perry's comedy "Madea's Family Funeral," which showcases his impressive range as a performer.
