Throughout the 1980s, a distinctive hairstyle characterized by tightly curled locks and a bold fashion statement, courtesy of a vibrant boot color, accompanied Brereton, a rugged and polarizing figure, as he took to the Australian Rules Football field. This enigmatic player's impressive career spanned five premiership sides with the Hawthorn Football Club, including the momentous 1989 grand final, where he famously demonstrated unwavering resolve and resilience by continuing to play on, despite suffering a serious injury, when he was struck in the opening minutes of the match, resulting in a broken ribcage. Following his playing career, Brereton transitioned to the Sydney Swans before ultimately joining the Collingwood Football Club.
