Dillon Hart Francis, an American electronic musician, record producer, and DJ, was born on October 5, 1987, in Los Angeles, California. His parents, an American father and a Serbian-Croatian mother, have had a profound influence on his life. His father, Robert Drew Francis, is an alternative medicines doctor, and Francis has often joked about being unable to find him.
Growing up, Francis was very sheltered, and his parents took great care to shape his worldview. He didn't know any swear words until he was 15 years old, and he was only allowed to watch TV if he first watched at least two hours of Sesame Street. This unusual upbringing has likely had a lasting impact on his creativity and perspective.
Francis's rise to fame began when he caught the attention of American producer Diplo, with whom he collaborated on the song "Que Que" featuring Latin-pop artist Maluca. His song "Masta Blasta" started as a 130 BPM house track but was later reworked after inspiration from Dutch musician Munchi, resulting in the popular moombahton track.
In 2013, Francis announced a headlining tour across the US and Canada, as well as the release of his debut album, which was initially scheduled for 2013 but experienced various delays. His major label debut album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule, was finally released in 2014 and featured collaborations with notable artists such as Twista, Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco, Major Lazer, and more. The album landed on Rolling Stone's "Top Electronic Albums of 2014" list, and his single "Get Low" with DJ Snake was released on February 11, 2014.
