Biography

Dirk 'Dick' Rijneke is a multifaceted creative force, exceling as a cinematographer, director, and producer. His educational foundation was laid at the Free Academy in the Netherlands, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned filmmaker Frans Zwartjes.

Rijneke's early career was marked by a series of innovative, avant-garde films that showcased his unique vision and storytelling abilities. This experimental phase was followed by the creation of several highly acclaimed and award-winning documentaries, including Living One's Life and Pinkel, which garnered significant attention and accolades on the international festival circuit, with screenings at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam.

The director's foray into feature filmmaking yielded two highly acclaimed and award-winning films, both of which premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival. His first fiction feature, Voro-Nova, received widespread critical acclaim, with Variety praising Rijneke's visual style, likening it to the work of masters such as Antonioni and Tarkovsky. The film's beauty, framing, and camera movements were particularly noteworthy, earning it a spot as a touchstone for other films.

Rijneke's collaborative efforts with Mildred van Leeuwaarden resulted in the large-scale production and award-winning City Life, a groundbreaking episode film that explores life in twelve different cultures. This ambitious project brought together directors from around the world, including Kieslowski, Mrinal Sen, Béla Tarr, and Rijneke & van Leeuwaarden. City Life was met with widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, opening the 19th Rotterdam Film Festival and closing the Berlinale.

In addition to his work on City Life, Rijneke has also co-produced a range of films, including action-packed fiction features like Reykjavik-Rotterdam and Hier (Yesterday),as well as the multi-award-winning and Tiger-nominated Silent Ones, in which he also served as a cinematographer.
