Biography

Here is the person biography:

Christine Elizabeth Dunbar, known professionally as Dixie Dunbar, was a vivacious and talented dancer and entertainer born on January 18, 1918, in Montgomery, Alabama. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, she was nicknamed "Tootsie" by her mother and began taking dancing lessons at a young age, showcasing a natural talent. Her mother moved her to New York, where her distinctive Southern drawl led to her being renamed "Dixie".

Dixie's career began in the 1930s, performing in big band orchestras, nightclubs, and restaurants. At 16, she was signed for a featured role in the Fox film George White's Scandals (1934),coached by legendary musical master George White. She performed in two songs with notable stars, including Cliff Edwards and Alice Faye.

In the same year, Dixie made her Broadway debut in the show Life Begins at 8:40 alongside Ray Bolger and Bert Lahr. Twentieth Century-Fox took notice of her spunky demeanor and signed her up for a series of films, including Professional Soldier (1935),King of Burlesque (1936),and Sing, Baby, Sing (1936).

Dixie continued to appear in films and stage shows throughout the 1930s, including Life Begins in College (1937),Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938),and Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938). She also appeared in the "Jones Family" film series and had roles in several other films.

However, Dixie was unable to rise above "B" material and achieve leading lady status. Disillusioned with filmmaking and feeling unfulfilled, she abandoned movie-making in 1939 and returned to the stage. She appeared in the show Yokel Boy and later toured in a nightclub act.

Dixie married Gene Snyder, the co-director of the Rockettes of Radio City Music Hall, in 1940. She later appeared in television commercials for Old Gold cigarettes, dancing in front of a giant cigarette box from 1949 to 1951.

Dixie was married three times and had no children. She operated a restaurant in Florida and began losing her eyesight due to glaucoma in the late 1970s. Dixie passed away on August 29, 1991, at the age of 72, following multiple heart attacks.
