Don Truckey is a multi-talented individual with a diverse range of creative pursuits. His first career was in print journalism, working as a reporter for The Calgary Herald from 1979 to 1986. During this time, he developed a parallel talent in screenwriting and wrote his first dramatic script, "Rough Justice," which won the national screenwriting award in 1985.
Truckey's experience in journalism also influenced his work on the TV series "Urban Angel," which he co-created and executive story edited. The show was the first Canadian series to be picked up by a US network and launched the acting career of Louis Ferreira.
In addition to his work in television, Truckey has written three produced television movies about sports. "Net Worth" (1995) was a multi-award winning true story about the formation of the NHL Players Association, while "Chicks With Sticks" (2004) was the world's first women's hockey movie. "Crazy Canucks" (2005) told the story of Canada's legendary downhill ski team.
Truckey has also written several children's novels, including "The Adventures of Caraway Kim... Southpaw" and "The Adventures of Caraway Kim... Right Wing." The latter is the basis for his script "All I Want for Christmas is to win Top Scorer!" which is currently unproduced.
In addition to his work in television and children's literature, Truckey has also written several other scripts, including "Paper Tiger," "Captives of the Warlords; Arthur Kent vs. the Taliban," "D Con," "Canook of the North... Hollywood League," and "Rockets." His latest project is "Below The Belt," an 8 X 60 series proposal that explores the nature of masculinity in the face of prostate cancer, a topic he is familiar with as a survivor of the disease.
Throughout his career, Truckey has demonstrated a versatility and a willingness to take on a wide range of projects, from drama and comedy to sports and children's literature. He has been recognized for his work with several awards and nominations, including the national screenwriting award for "Rough Justice" and four award-winning performances for the TV series "Street Legal."
