Biography

Doug Mattingly's origin story unfolded in a working-class suburb of Baltimore, Maryland, where his parents, a multifaceted individual with aspirations to become a playwright, painter, and novelist, and a medical professional, respectively, instilled in him a rich cultural heritage.

As a young child and adolescent, Mattingly was fascinated by a wide range of artistic expressions, including visual arts such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, as well as performance arts like music, acting, and filmmaking. His creative endeavors also extended to the written word, where he penned poetry and short stories.

Mattingly's academic trajectory was marked by his acceptance into his high school's esteemed art and music programs, where he delved deeper into his artistic pursuits. Simultaneously, he began studying the guitar at the tender age of 11, a passion that would only intensify over time.

This early exposure to a diverse range of artistic disciplines not only nurtured his creative spirit but also laid the foundation for his future endeavors, which would eventually take him down a path of artistic expression and self-discovery.

Doug, a straight-A student, successfully managed to harmoniously balance his passion for music with his dedication to year-round athletic pursuits, encompassing a trio of sports: soccer, basketball, and baseball.

He was subsequently awarded an academic scholarship to attend Calvert Hall College, a renowned all-boys Catholic institution situated in the esteemed town of Towson, Maryland, where he had the opportunity to further cultivate his interests in sports, music, and the visual arts.

As the years went by, Douglas's fascination with music began to take center stage, with his affections gravitating towards the guitar, an instrument that would soon become an integral part of his life's melody. In place of traditional term papers and homework assignments, Doug opted to express his creativity through the production of short films, a medium that not only showcased his artistic flair but also managed to captivate the attention of his teachers and classmates alike. Despite never having the opportunity to audition for his school's theatre productions, Doug found himself torn between two passions: the allure of the stage and the sonic splendor of music, a dichotomy that would ultimately lead him to ponder the question of which path to pursue as he navigated the process of selecting a college major.

Doug's academic prowess was rewarded with a full scholarship to the esteemed University of Southern California, where he immersed himself in the world of music by studying guitar at the renowned Thornton School of Music. In addition to honing his musical skills, he also delved into the realm of theatre, taking a multitude of classes that allowed him to showcase his thespian talents. During his time at USC, Doug had the opportunity to appear in several student films, gaining valuable experience in the world of cinema.

Upon graduating, Doug set out on a thrilling adventure, touring the Western United States with a rock band that was the epitome of cool. The band's journey took them to the picturesque state of Hawaii, where they spent a memorable four-month stint soaking up the sun, playing music, and living the dream.

Doug made a triumphant return to the City of Angels, Los Angeles, where he immersed himself in the vibrant music scene, performing with numerous bands and honing his skills as a studio guitarist. As his artistic ambitions continued to flourish, he pursued higher education, earning a Master's degree in guitar performance from the University of Southern California, where he had the esteemed privilege of studying privately with the illustrious jazz guitar virtuoso, Joe Diorio. Despite being wooed by various industry professionals, including managers, casting directors, and talent agents, Doug remained steadfast in his dedication to his craft, ultimately releasing three full-length solo singer/songwriter rock recordings on his own independent label, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his artistic vision.

As his musical career continued to flourish, Doug made the bold decision to relocate to the vibrant city of New York, where he secured representation with prominent modeling and commercial agencies. This move marked a significant turning point in his artistic journey, as he prepared to unleash his sophomore album "Building A Monastery" upon the world.

The album, released in 2006, would go on to receive widespread critical acclaim, earning the prestigious title of "Best Local Album 2006" in Baltimore's Citypaper. This recognition served as a testament to Doug's growing reputation as a talented musician.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Doug also made a triumphant return to the world of acting. He enrolled in the esteemed Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., where he honed his craft and further developed his skills as a thespian.

Moreover, Doug chose to share his passion for music with others by taking on a teaching role at a local college. This appointment allowed him to impart his knowledge and expertise to the next generation of musicians, cementing his status as a respected figure in the music industry.

As his professional theatre career in Washington D.C. came to a close, he transitioned into the world of independent short films, where he honed his craft and continued to make a name for himself. Eventually, he made the decision to return to his roots in Los Angeles, rekindling his passion for acting and setting the stage for a resurgence in his career.

Since his return, he has expanded his repertoire to include commercials, promos, and feature-length and short films, showcasing his versatility and range as a performer. Additionally, he has turned his attention to the creative process, taking on the roles of writer, director, and editor, and even producing his own independent short film, "Conviction", a testament to his multifaceted talents.
