This chance encounter led to McPhail being signed by the studio at the tender age of nineteen, marking the beginning of his professional career in Hollywood. His early role was as the backup vocalist for the iconic Nelson Eddy in the 1938 film adaptation of The Girl of the Golden West, although unfortunately, he did not receive any screen time to showcase his talents.
