Tu Duu-chih, born in 1955 in Taipei, embarked on a career in film as a sound engineer in 1973 through the Film Technicians Training Program conducted by Central Motion Pictures Corporation. He began his professional journey in 1978 as an assistant sound engineer for CMPC, which marked the beginning of his illustrious tenure in the Taiwan film industry.
Throughout the 1980s, Tu established himself as one of the leading sound technicians in Taiwan, playing a crucial role in the sound engineering for the renowned filmmakers of the "Taiwan New Wave." His extensive portfolio includes the majority of Taiwanese films that have garnered international critical acclaim.
Tu's impressive body of work includes collaborations with esteemed directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien, with whom he worked on films like "City of Sadness," "The Puppetmaster," "Good Men, Good Women," "Flowers of Shanghai," "Millennium Mambo," and "Kohi Jikou." His partnership with Edward Yang resulted in the creation of iconic films like "That Day, On the Beach," "Taipei Story," "The Terrorizer," "A Brighter Summer Day," "A Confusion, Confusion," "Mahjong," and "A One and a Two."
Tu's work also extends to other notable films, including "A Borrowed Life" directed by Wu Nien-jen, "The Peach Blossom Land" directed by Stan Lai, "In the Mood for Love" directed by Wong Kar Wai, and "What Time is it There?" directed by Tsai Ming-liang.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of cinema, Tu received the Prix du Jury a Un Technicien at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival for his work on "Millennium Mambo" and "What Time is it There?"
