Biography

Edwin Richard Eckstein, affectionately referred to as Eddie by those closest to him, was born on the twenty-ninth day of November, 1939, in the culturally rich and cosmopolitan city of Johannesburg, South Africa. His academic odyssey commenced at Marist Brothers in Observatory, where he successfully completed his junior and high school studies, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors. Throughout this period, Eddie's innate passion for music and performance began to evolve, as he skillfully juggled his responsibilities as a clerk for a prominent banking group with his extracurricular activities, often singing in his spare time, showcasing his impressive vocal talents to anyone who would listen.

As Eddie's music career began to flourish, he took a significant step forward by joining the renowned Al Willox Quartet, where he had the opportunity to hone his skills as a Rock 'n Roll singer. This formative experience laid the groundwork for his future success.

In the early 1960s, Eddie became a familiar face on Rhodesian television, regularly appearing alongside the talented Flippie van Vuuren's band. This exposure helped to further establish his reputation as a skilled musician.

Following his time with Flippie van Vuuren's band, Eddie went on to join the Jimmie Rayson Combo, where he continued to develop his craft and build his fan base.

After the eventual disbandment of The Bats, Eddie decided to pursue a solo career, leveraging his diverse talents to explore new avenues as an actor and comedian.

Noted for his captivating performances, Eddie's most memorable role was undoubtedly that of Mannie Bloom in the television series "Oh George", a production that showcased his remarkable talent. Following this, he embarked on a one-year hiatus in Sydney, Australia, where he had the opportunity to appear in the production "I love my Wife". Upon his return to South Africa in 1983, Eddie's passion for the theatre continued to flourish, as he took on a wide range of productions, including the popular musical "Little Shop of Horrors", the comedy "Pyjama Tops", the farce "Not Now Darling", the drama "Grin and Bear It", and the romantic comedy "What about Love".

Eddie Eckstein's professional trajectory extends far beyond the realm of theatrical performances, as he also took to the stage in a festive production at the Wild Coast Sun in 1989, aptly titled Cyclone Eddie, a testament to his impressive range and adaptability.
