Edgar Bravo, a renowned Latino writer and director, has devoted his career to exploring the complex cultural dynamics that arise from the intersection of North American and Latino cultures. His academic pursuits at the University of California, Los Angeles' (UCLA) graduate school of film, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1993, played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic vision.
During his time at UCLA, Bravo's film "Mi Casa" garnered widespread recognition, including the grand prize at the A&E national film competition. This prestigious award served as a springboard for his directorial career, prompting him to tackle his next project, "Mi Hermano," a drama that courageously addressed the often-overlooked issue of AIDS and Latino immigrants. The film's poignant portrayal earned Bravo a Cine Eagle award and was broadcast nationally on Univision and PBS.
Following the completion of his graduate studies, Bravo wrote and directed the feature film "I'll Love You Forever... Tonight" (1992),which received widespread critical acclaim, including reviews from the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. The project boasted a talented cast, featuring Thomas Jane, and was distributed nationally by Phaedra.
Bravo's subsequent work, "Venus Rising" (1995),required a re-write and re-shoots, which he successfully executed under the guidance of Lumiere Films, the producers of the acclaimed film "Leaving Las Vegas." This collaboration led to his involvement in the feature film "The Perfect Husband," further solidifying his reputation as a skilled and versatile director.
The success of "Mi Hermano" also caught the attention of Columbia-Tri-Star and Telemundo, resulting in Bravo's first directorial stint in television. He went on to direct an episode of the popular police drama "Reyes y Rey" (1998),set in a fictional Latino border town, which received exceptional ratings and led to his contract to direct two episodes of the co-production "Angeles," a Latino adaptation of the classic series "Charlie's Angels."
In addition to his work in film and television, Bravo has also collaborated with acclaimed writers Bob Vickery and Dale Chase, adapting their stories for the screen. Their joint project, "Lust, Love & Repetition," is currently in production, with Bravo serving as director.
Furthermore, Bravo's script "The Closing Bell" has been recognized by the Telluride Indie Fest as one of the top 25 indie scripts of 2002. His long-term goal is to bring his script, "The Conquest Of Mexico," to life, a project that aims to retell the story of Mexico's rich cultural heritage before the devastating impact of European colonization.
