Elmer Bernstein's educational journey began at the prestigious Walden School, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. He then took his talents to New York University, further honing his skills in the world of music.

Before embarking on a career in film composition, Bernstein served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. His duties included writing scores for the service radio unit, a unique and challenging experience that helped shape his skills as a composer.

In addition to his work in the military, Bernstein also had the opportunity to collaborate with the legendary Glenn Miller's Army Air Force Band. He wrote and arranged musical numbers for the band, further expanding his repertoire and expertise.

After the war, Bernstein's career as a film composer took off. He was a protégé of the renowned Aaron Copland, who himself studied under the tutelage of Roger Sessions and Stefan Wolpe. This rich musical heritage had a profound impact on Bernstein's work, influencing his unique style and approach to composition.

Throughout his career, Bernstein worked in a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, theater, and even acting and dancing. His early composition work included scores for United Nations radio programs, television documentaries, and industrial films.

Bernstein's original scores for films showcased his incredible range and versatility. He was a master of adapting to different styles and genres, and his work continues to be celebrated for its innovative and groundbreaking approach. Some of his most notable scores include the jazz-infused The Man with the Golden Arm (1955),the light-hearted musical comedy Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967),and the iconic western theme for The Magnificent Seven (1960).

In addition to his work in film, Bernstein held a prominent position within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, serving as vice president from 1963 to 1969.

Years before his passing, Bernstein's music gained a new and unexpected following among English football fans.
