Born in the vibrant city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Em's early years were shaped by their Austrian-immigrant father and French-Canadian mother. Growing up in the suburbs, Em's unique blend of cultural influences would later inform their artistic pursuits.
As a teenager, Em embarked on an unconventional educational path, opting for home schooling. This decision allowed them to focus on their artistic development and eventually led them to London, England, where they enrolled in The Actors Temple to study the renowned Meisner technique. Simultaneously, Em pursued fine-art studies at Central Saint Martins, further honing their creative skills.
Upon completing their education, Em returned to their hometown of Vancouver, also known as "Hollywood North." It was during this time that they were discovered by a talent agent and joined the local punk band The Dirt, taking on the roles of backing vocalist and bassist. This musical venture not only provided Em with a creative outlet but also introduced them to the world of show business.
Em's breakthrough role arrived in the form of Noreen Vanderslice, a quirky and captivating character in the critically acclaimed FX mini-series Fargo (2014). This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a successful acting career, with subsequent appearances in the Marvel superhero hit Deadpool (2016),the Jason Reitman comedy Tully (2018),and the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018),where Em portrayed the enigmatic Elspeth.
