Biography

Ethel Smith, a talented pianist and organist, earned her degree from Carnegie Tech, where she majored in piano, laying the foundation for a successful music career.

After graduating, Smith secured a position as an organist in California, where she honed her skills and gained valuable experience.

However, her musical talents soon took her on an international journey, as she traveled to Rio de Janeiro for a four-week booking, immersing herself in the vibrant Brazilian music scene.

Upon her return to the United States, Smith's music career reached new heights during World War II, when her rendition of "Tico Tico" ("Tico Tico no Fubá", the Brazilian title) became a major hit in New York and across the country, catapulting her to fame.

As her popularity grew, Smith was sought after for film appearances, and her earnings enabled her to live a comfortable life, free from financial worries.

Eventually, Smith's focus shifted from music to acting, as she took to the stage, appearing in numerous plays, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Throughout her life, Smith remained childless, dedicating herself to her craft and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of music and theater.

Tragically, Smith's life was cut short due to a progressive illness, leaving behind a rich musical heritage and a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
