Eugenio Polgovsky, a visionary Mexican filmmaker and visual artist, was born on June 29, 1977, in Mexico City. He passed away on August 11, 2017. Polgovsky was a multifaceted creative force, working as a director, cinematographer, editor, sound designer, and producer on his films.
He gained international recognition for his documentaries, including "Tropic of Cancer," which premiered at the Semaine de la Critique in 2005, and "Los Herederos" or "The Inheritors," which screened at the Mostra of Venice, Orrizontti in 2008, and the Berlinale Generation in 2009.
In 2016, Polgovsky made history as the first filmmaker to be invited as a Fellow Communer in Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge.
As the founder of Tecolote Films in Mexico City, established in 2004, Polgovsky received numerous accolades for his work, including four Ariel Awards, Mexico's equivalent of the Academy Awards, and over 20 international awards. One of his most notable awards was the Joris Ivens Award at Cinema Du Réel in Paris in 2005.
Polgovsky was known for his innovative and experimental approach to documentary filmmaking, which often explored the lives and conditions of marginalized communities. His personal cinematography and meticulous editing style brought a unique poetic eye to the medium, capturing the essence of Mexico's rural and urban landscapes.
