Farhan Akhtar, the multi-talented producer-director-writer-actor-singer, was born in 1974 to renowned Indian film writer and poet, Javed Akhtar, and writer-director, Honey Irani. Growing up in an environment that encouraged creativity and originality, Farhan developed into a maverick filmmaker whose works reflect fresh and innovative content that resonates with audiences.
In 1999, Farhan collaborated with his friend Ritesh Sidhwani to form Excel Entertainment, a production banner that has become synonymous with excellence in filmmaking. His directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai (2001),a coming-of-age film, gained cult status and earned him critical acclaim for his honest and path-breaking writing, as well as his ability to elicit mature performances from his cast. The film won the National Award for 'Best Hindi Feature Film' and several Filmfare awards.
Almost two decades later, Dil Chahta Hai continues to influence a generation of filmmakers. Seven years after his directorial debut, Farhan made his acting and singing debut in Rock On!! (2008),another successful film that earned him the National Award for 'Best Hindi Feature Film' and a Filmfare award for 'Best Debut Performance'.
Farhan's subsequent films, including Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013),cemented his position as a versatile and talented filmmaker. His portrayal of Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag set the standard for other actors playing titular protagonists in biopics and earned him numerous awards, including the National Award for 'Best Popular Film providing Wholesome Entertainment'.
In addition to his work in film, Farhan has been involved in various social causes, including the founding of MARD (Men against Rape & Discrimination) in 2012. He was also appointed as the first male UNwomen goodwill ambassador (South Asia) in 2014.
