Frank Miller was born in Olney, Maryland, to a nurse mother and a carpenter and electrician father, and was raised in Montpelier, Vermont, a place that would later influence his work. As a child of Irish descent, Miller's cultural heritage would play a significant role in shaping his artistic vision. The 1970s and 1980s saw Miller emerge as a prominent figure in the world of comics, with his work as a writer and artist gaining widespread recognition.
During this period, Miller collaborated with his friend Klaus Janson to create the Marvel series "Daredevil," which he wrote and penciled. The duo also produced two spin-off series focused on the character Electra, as well as a miniseries centered around the X-Men's Wolverine. Miller's work on "Ronin," a miniseries published by DC Comics in the mid-1980s, further solidified his reputation as a master of the medium.
However, it was his work on DC's iconic character Batman that truly cemented Miller's status as a comic book legend. In 1980, he wrote the acclaimed "Wanted - Santa Claus - Dead or Alive!" for DC Comics, a story that showcased his unique take on the Caped Crusader. This was followed by his groundbreaking miniseries "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" in 1986, an alternate history story that reimagined Batman in a gritty, dystopian future.
Miller's work on "Batman: Year One" in 1988, which explored Batman's early days as a crimefighter, was equally well-received. The story, which was published by DC Comics, offered a fresh perspective on the character and his origins. In 1996, Miller collaborated with Image Comics to produce "Spawn vs. Batman," a one-shot issue that pitted two of the most iconic characters in the world of comics against each other.
In addition to his work in comics, Miller has also made a name for himself in the world of film. He wrote the screenplays for RoboCop 2 (1990) and RoboCop 3 (1993),and even adapted his own comic book series into a film. Miller's directing debut came with The Spirit (2008),a big-screen adaptation of the classic comic book character. He also co-directed Sin City (2005) and Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014),two films that brought his unique visual style to the big screen.
