Biography

Jerry Boyd, the offspring of Irish emigrants, embarked on a life of remarkable occupational versatility, initially taking on the humble role of shoeshine boy, before progressing to a bartender, and subsequently, operating a cement truck.

After stepping away from the intense and thrilling world of bullfighting, Boyd found himself at a crossroads, prompting him to make the bold decision to leave behind the excitement of the bullring and return to the place he called home - the vibrant and sun-kissed city of Los Angeles. Upon his return, Boyd dedicated himself to a rigorous regimen of physical training, frequenting numerous top-notch boxing gyms scattered throughout the city in order to hone his physique and further develop his physical fitness.

Throughout a considerable duration, Boyd, an untrained writer who had not had the benefit of formal instruction in the art of writing, began to commit his thoughts and ideas to written form, thereby initiating a process that would ultimately lead to the creation of his literary works.

Despite encountering a substantial number of rejection letters and slips, Boyd persevered in his endeavor to become a writer, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his craft and a resilience that allowed him to overcome the numerous obstacles that stood in his way.

As the years went by, Boyd's determination and steadfastness in the pursuit of his goal continued unabated, ultimately resulting in the realization of his dream of becoming a writer.

Boyd, a multifaceted individual, opted to employ a pen name, F.X. Toole, to create a clear dichotomy between his careers as a boxer and a writer.

This pseudonym, a masterful blend of two distinct influences, is comprised of Francis Xavier, a 16th-century educator, philosopher, and Jesuit saint renowned for his intellectual curiosity and spiritual depth.

Moreover, it incorporates Peter O'Toole, a celebrated Irish actor, whose artistic talents and charismatic persona have captivated audiences worldwide.

By adopting this pseudonym, Boyd was able to compartmentalize his professional identities, thereby allowing him to freely explore his creative expression through writing, unencumbered by the influences of his experiences as a boxer.

Through this strategic move, Boyd was able to maintain a distinct separation between his two careers, thereby ensuring that his literary endeavors were not unduly influenced by his experiences as a boxer.

As the literary world began to take notice of Boyd's impressive literary endeavors, particularly his notable work "The Monkey Look", a prominent New York literary agent extended an offer to represent the author, recognizing his immense potential and acknowledging the significant strides he had made in his writing career. This marked a pivotal moment in Boyd's professional journey, as he was subsequently approached by Ecco Press, a reputable and well-established publishing house under the HarperCollins umbrella, to publish his long-awaited collection of stories centered around the professional boxing community, an endeavor that had been years in the making. The culmination of this project was the publication of "Rope Burns: Stories From the Corner", a testament to Boyd's unwavering dedication to his craft, which he proudly dedicated to his lifelong boxing partner, Dub Huntley, a constant source of inspiration and support throughout his life. The book's release, when Boyd was 70 years young, was met with widespread critical acclaim, solidifying his position as a masterful storyteller and cementing his legacy as a literary icon.
