Salvatores attended school in the Lombard metropolis, where he began his journey in theater. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Milan in 1968, but his passion for drama led him to study at the Accademia d''arte drammatica, a drama school at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano. He completed his training with a diploma and immersed himself in the student protests of the time, particularly in Milan, which was a hotbed of left-wing radical activity.
As a key figure in the newly emerging proletarian street theater, Salvatores co-founded the Teatro dell''Elfo in Milan in 1972 and went on to perform in 21 productions over the next decade, including a notable success with a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate".
He made his feature film debut in 1983 with "Sogno di una notte di mezza estate", which received an award in Venice. Salvatores' subsequent films, such as "Marrakech Express" (1989) and "Turné" (1990),showcased his own political and social experiences, and were well-received by a larger Italian cinema audience.
The director's international breakthrough came with "Mediterraneo" (1991),a tragicomic film that won an Oscar for best foreign contribution and told the story of the rapprochement between Italian occupiers and local Greeks during World War II. His subsequent films, including "Puerto Escondido" (1992) and "Sud" (1993),explored themes of identity, culture, and social change.
Salvatores' later films, such as "Nirvana" (1997),"Denti" (2000),and "Amnesia" (2001),were mainly known in Italian cinema, while his television film "Io non ho paura" (2003) was a huge success when broadcast in 2005, with 35% of viewers tuning in. His film "Quo vadis, baby?" (2005) was an adaptation of a novel by Grazia Verasani, in which a female protagonist searches for her sister.
