Gardner McKay, the son of Deane McKay, a renowned ad executive, and Catherine, grew up in the culturally rich environments of New York and Paris. His formative years were marked by a unique blend of American and European influences, which would later shape his artistic endeavors.
Despite his academic aspirations, McKay's collegiate journey at Cornell University was cut short when his father's untimely passing left him reeling. The loss prompted him to take a temporary hiatus from his studies, during which he gained valuable work experience in the advertising industry.
