Gary hails from the Lincoln projects of Harlem, where his curiosity about the arts was sparked. After moving to the Bronx, he was accepted into a school program for artistically gifted kids, alongside his lifelong friend and colleague David Zayas. He later attended the High School of Performing Arts as a Ballet Major, but his passion for acting soon took over. One day, he skipped class to watch a Broadway production of Equus, starring Leonard Nimoy, which left a lasting impression on him.
Gary is now an award-nominated actor, having worked extensively in television, film, and theater. He is one of the founders of the acclaimed LAByrinth Theater Company, alongside John Ortiz, Paul Calderon, David Deblinger, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. He has collaborated with numerous acclaimed writers, including Pulitzer Prize winners John Patrick Shanley, Nilo Cruz, Lynn Nottage, and Stephen Adly Guirgis. Gary has worked with award-winning directors such as Anna D. Shapiro, Tony Taccone, Brian Kulick, and Jo Bonny at prominent theaters like Steppenwolf, Yale Rep, 2nd Stage, The McCarter, La Jolla Playhouse, Berkeley Rep, and The Joseph Papp, Public Theater.
Gary has received a JEFF Award nomination for his portrayal of Cousin Julio in Steppenwolf's production of The Mother Fucker with the Hat. In television, he has appeared as a Guest Star on shows like Fatal Attraction, Law & Order, The Resident, City on a Hill, The Blacklist, Law & Order SVU, 13 Reasons Why, The Last Ship, Oz, and The Sopranos.
