George Savalas, a renowned Greek-American actor, is most famously associated with his starring role as Detective Stavros alongside his elder brother Telly Savalas on the highly acclaimed television detective series Kojak, which aired from 1973 to 1978.
Prior to his successful television career, Savalas had a distinguished military background, having served in the Pacific during World War II as a decorated U.S. Navy gunner. He later honed his craft at Columbia University's School of Drama, where he refined his skills as a stage actor and acting instructor.
Before transitioning to television, Savalas had a successful career on stage, performing with the Clyde McCoy Big Band as their drummer. He made his television debut on the Dick Powell Theater and went on to guest star on various other series. His film credits include notable roles in Genghis Khan (1965) and Kelly's Heroes (1970).
After Kojak concluded, Savalas ventured into the music world, releasing a Top-10 Greek language record and embarking on a tour with his band, performing at prominent venues such as Carnegie Hall. He eventually returned to his first love, the stage, and appeared in numerous off-Broadway productions.
Tragically, Savalas' life was cut short due to leukemia in 1985, at the age of 60. He left behind a loving wife and their six children, comprising five sons and one daughter.
