Biography

Georges Conchon was a French writer and screenwriter born on May 9, 1925, in St. Avitus, Puy-de-Dôme. He grew up in a family of teachers and after graduating in philosophy, he pursued a career in politics.

Conchon began his political career in the French Union's Assembly, where he served as a division head from 1952 to 1958. During this time, he also started writing, often inspired by his extensive travels, particularly in Africa.

In 1960, he became a secretary in the French Senate, a position he held until 1980. Concurrently, he began his career as a journalist and novelist. His first published novel, "Les Grandes Lessives," was released in 1953, followed by "Chemins écartés."

Conchon's writing career was marked by numerous awards and recognition. He received the Fénéon Prize in 1956, the Booksellers Prize in 1960 for "La Corrida de la victoire," and the prestigious Prix Goncourt in 1964 for "L'État sauvage."

As a screenwriter, Conchon had a remarkable track record, working on films such as "L'Horizon" (1967),"Sept Morts sur ordonnance" (1976),"La Victoire en chantant" (1976),"Judith Therpauve" (1978),and "La Banquière" (1980). He also worked in television, directing a collection of films and creating the series "Châteauvallon."

Some of Conchon's books were adapted into films, including "The Savage State" and "Le sucre." His last film collaboration was on the scenario for the biopic "Lacenaire," directed by Francis Girod and released in 1990.

Throughout his life, Conchon received numerous honors and awards. He was a Chevalier de la Legion of Honour and an Officer of the Order of Merit and Arts and Letters. Politically, he was active in the PSU and later the Socialist Party.

Georges Conchon passed away on July 29, 1990, leaving behind a legacy as a renowned French writer and screenwriter.
