Gerhard Berger is an Austrian former racing driver and motorsport director. He was born and raised in Austria, where he developed a passion for motorsports from a young age. After completing his education, Berger pursued a career in motor vehicle mechanics before making his debut as a racing driver in 1978.
Berger's racing career spanned over two decades, during which he participated in various championships, including the International Alfasud Cup, the European Touring Car Championship, and Formula 3. He made his Formula 1 debut in 1984 and drove for several teams, including ATS, Arrows, Benetton, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Throughout his career, Berger achieved numerous successes, including three Formula 1 wins, 13 pole positions, and 385 championship points. He also finished in the top three in the drivers' world championship standings on several occasions, including a third-place finish in 1988 and 1990.
Berger's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1989, he suffered a serious accident at the Imola Grand Prix, which left him with burn injuries to his hands. He also experienced a difficult season in 1996, during which he slipped to sixth place in the world driver rankings.
Despite these setbacks, Berger remained a respected figure in the motorsport community, known for his talent, dedication, and sportsmanship. After retiring from racing, he went on to become motorsport director at BMW, where he led the BMW Williams F1 team to a runner-up finish in the constructors' championship. He later returned to Formula 1 as team manager of the Toro Rosso racing team from 2006 to 2008.
