Gertrude Welcker, a renowned German actress, embarked on a remarkable journey in the world of stage and screen. From 1916 to 1919, she honed her craft in the esteemed Max Reinhardt theaters, including Deutsches Theater Berlin, Kammerspiele, and Volksbühne, where she showcased her talents to a wide audience.

In 1917, Gertrude made her film debut in the captivating "Hans Trutz in the Land of Plenty," marking the beginning of a successful cinematic career that would span over a decade. Throughout her illustrious film career, she appeared in an impressive 64 features, solidifying her position as a respected figure in the German film industry.

As her film career began to wind down, Gertrude continued to tread the boards of the theatre, staying on for a couple of years before shifting her focus to other pursuits. However, the outbreak of World War II brought about a significant turning point in her life. In 1941, she joined the Red Cross, donning the role of a nurse as she worked tirelessly to provide aid to those in need.

As the war raged on, Gertrude found herself forced to flee her homeland, and in 1941, she escaped to Sweden, adopting the pseudonym Gertud Carlsund as she began a new chapter in her life.
