Gregg Barbanell's journey in the entertainment industry began in his hometown of San Francisco, California, where he developed a passion for theater during his time at Washington High School. Upon graduating, he was accepted into the prestigious School of Theater at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, where he honed his skills for a year before reapplying to CalArts for a spot in the School of Film.
Impressed by a screenplay he wrote, Gregg was accepted into the elite directing program at CalArts, where he was fortunate to be mentored by the renowned Alexander Mackendrick. In 1977, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film, and soon found work as an assistant sound editor, quickly rising through the ranks to become a supervising sound editor within a year.
Two years after graduating, Gregg founded Mag City, Inc., a sound editing company that attracted high-profile clients such as Peter Bogdanovich, John Carpenter, and Francis Ford Coppola, among others. During his seven-year tenure as a supervising sound editor at Mag City, Gregg discovered and developed his natural talent for Foley work, a skill he would later focus on exclusively.
After selling Mag City, Gregg dedicated himself to the art of Foley, leveraging his sterling reputation, excellent work ethic, and extensive industry connections to build a prolific list of credits spanning over 35 years.
