Gregory Shane Helms is an American professional wrestler who has made a lasting impact in the world of wrestling. Currently signed with WWE under a legends contract, Helms has worn multiple hats, serving as both a wrestler and a backstage producer. Throughout his illustrious career, he has wrestled under various personas, including The Hurricane, Gregory Helms, and Hurricane Helms.
Helms' wrestling journey began in 1991, at the tender age of 17, when he started competing in numerous independent promotions. During this time, he won numerous light heavyweight and tag team championships with the Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts. In 1999, he signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW),where he gained fame as "Sugar" Shane Helms, a member of the popular group 3 Count.
During his time with WCW, Helms won both the WCW Hardcore Championship and the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. When WCW was acquired by WWE, Helms' contract was retained by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF),now known as WWE. He then renamed himself "The Hurricane" and went on to win the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
Helms later formed a tag team with Rosey, and together they won the World Tag Team Championship. In 2005, he dropped his superhero gimmick and began wrestling under his real name, Gregory Helms. He once again won the Cruiserweight Championship in early 2006, holding it for over a year and setting a record as the longest-reigning Cruiserweight Champion and the longest-reigning champion in SmackDown history.
After a prolonged absence due to neck fusion surgery, Helms returned to SmackDown in September 2008, reintroducing himself as Hurricane Helms. He later moved to the ECW brand, where he reverted to his Gregory Helms persona and took on a role as a backstage interviewer. In mid-2009, he brought back The Hurricane character, appearing as both Gregory Helms and The Hurricane on the ECW brand.
Following the disbandment of ECW, Helms was released by WWE in February 2010. However, he made a surprise comeback in 2018 and 2021, entering the Royal Rumble matches as a surprise entrant. Throughout his remarkable career, Gregory Shane Helms has left an indelible mark on the world of professional wrestling.
