Biography

A renowned composer, author, conductor, and arranger, Hall Johnson's impressive educational background includes stints at the Knox Institute, Atlanta University, Allen University, the University of Southern California, the Hahn School of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, and the New York Institute of Musical Art. Notably, he also had the privilege of studying under the tutelage of esteemed music theorist Percy Goetschius, and was later awarded an Honorary Music Degree from the prestigious Philadelphia Musical Academy.

In 1925, Johnson took the initiative to form the Hall Johnson Choir, which would go on to perform in a wide range of settings, including concerts, films, theater productions, radio broadcasts, television appearances, and recordings. His remarkable talents as an arranger and conductor were further showcased when he was responsible for the music direction of the Broadway production of "Green Pastures," in which his choir made a memorable appearance. Additionally, Johnson penned the original stage score for the Broadway musical "Run, Little Chillun."

Johnson's creative endeavors continued to flourish in the following years. In 1936, he founded the Festival Negro Chorus of Los Angeles, and his impressive work was recognized internationally when he performed at the International Festival of Fine Arts in Berlin. In 1951, Johnson embarked on a tour of Germany and Vienna, courtesy of the US State Department, and was later honored with the New York City Citation in 1962.

Throughout his illustrious career, Johnson remained committed to promoting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of African-American music. He was also an active member of the New York City Citizens Advisory Commission for Cultural Affairs, dedicated to fostering a vibrant cultural landscape in the city.
