Halyna Hutchins was a highly accomplished and renowned cinematographer based in Los Angeles, boasting a impressive educational background, having graduated from the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI) conservatory in 2015.
Throughout her career, Halyna established a remarkable track record of successful narrative features, earning her recognition as one of American Cinematographer's Rising Stars of 2019 and being selected as a cinematographer for the esteemed 21st Century Fox DP Lab in 2018.
Born in Ukraine in 1979, Halyna spent her formative years growing up on a Soviet military base on the Arctic Circle. She later attended Kyiv National University, where she earned a degree in international journalism.
Before transitioning to cinematography, Halyna worked as an investigative journalist on British documentary productions. Her subsequent move to Los Angeles marked the beginning of her cinematography career, which gained momentum when she was selected for the 21st Century Fox DP Lab in 2018.
In addition to her professional achievements, Halyna's passion for her craft was recognized with an award for best cinematography at the 2019 English Riviera Film Festival for her work on "Treacle".
Tragically, Halyna's life was cut short on October 21, 2021, when a prop weapon, mistakenly loaded with a live round, misfired during the production of the western Rust. In a posthumous honor, Halyna was made an honorary member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) on November 14, 2021.
